Birchbox review – March 2015

The March 2015 Birchbox theme was creativity.

The products

Elite Therapeutics Rosemary Eucalyptus Body Creme
Sample size 14ml
Sample value $1.12US

Birchbox says – ‘Luxe hydrator that nourishes and soothes skin with 70% organic ingredients. Smooth generously onto skin after showering, or anytime you need a moisture boost.’

I thought this was a very Australian bush smelling body creme. It’s not Australian though, it’s made in the US. I quite enjoyed this body moisturiser.

It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in Product
Sample size 2oz
Sample value $9US

Birchbox says – ‘This 10-in-one treatment addresses the spectrum of hair damage, from brittleness to frizz. Smooth one to two spritzes into dry hair with your hands, then style. Use more for wet hair.’

Because I have thick her that loves to get knots in it and be frizzy pretty much all the time. When I see these kinds of products in my Birchbox I get super excited. This product made me happy, it smells quite nice and did make my hair feel a bit nicer.

Jelly Pong Pong Glow Getter Highlighter
Sample size 4ml
Sample value $12.75US

Birchbox says – ‘This weightless gel formula gives a suble, pearlescent shimmer. Dab onto cheekbones and brow bones – then glow get ’em!’

My last experience with this brand hadn’t gone done too well, I had a chubby lip pencil that just seemed to smudge everywhere. It wasn’t very pleasant. This however brightened my day. I found it best as a highlighter under my brow bones. It really did brighten up my eyes and it’s been added into my daily make-up routine. Note though, that a little goes a long way!

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser
Sample size 15ml
Sample value $3.75US

Birchbox says – ‘British award-winner that uses a two step ritual to gently purify all skin types. Massage into skin. Soak muslin cloth with hot water, then wipe off in small circles.’

What a nice way to cleanse my face I felt like I’d been to the day spa. First massaging it in and then removing it with a hot cloth. So simple and yet relaxing. This cleanser Rosemary and Eucalyptus as well. I’m not sure if this is a new beauty trend? It’s the second product in the box to include these ingredients.

Roloxin Lift Revialising Facial Masque Treatment
Sample size 2 packs
Sample value $22US

Birchbox says – ‘This treatment instantly reduces the look of wrinkles and pores, and lasts up to 24 hours. Squeeze for 20 seconds then smooth onto damp face, avoiding eyes. Wait 7 minutes and rinse.’

For me this is probably a bit too long of a process to do every morning. Waiting 7 minutes with a face mask on! However to my surprise it did work quite nicely to minimise the small crease lines on my forehead and the pores on my nose. It’s also a little bit pricey but definitely worth it for those special occasions when you want to look your very best e.g. a wedding ;-)

How much does it cost?

Birchbox costs $10US a month. I signed up for a 12 month subscription of $110US, you get one month free and it works out $9.16US a month

I use Shipito to ship the box from the US to Australia. This months shipping cost was $6.33 using airmail economy.

TOTAL COST $15.49US (on today’s dollar that makes it $20.17 Aussie dollars)

Was it worth it?

Birchbox is one of my favourite subscription boxes. This month was great because I discovered a totally cool face mask that I’ll use to look fabulous at my wedding as well as a new cleanser, hair spray-in treatment, moisturiser and a brow higlighter. These are all products that have brightened my week and were in line with the kinds of products that I need and use on a daily basis. My box value was really high at nearly $50US.

Wantable Intimates review – March 2015

Wantable Intimates review – March 2015

There are three different Wantable boxes that you can subscribe to – Accessories, Make-up or Intimates.

Wantable use a style quiz to determine what items to send you each month. This month I changed mine to include bras in the love category. My preferences for this box were set to:

Love – loungewear, leggings and bras
Like – lingerie, panties and socks
Dislike – tights/hoisery and shapewear

I also put in a special request for some MUK LUK Slipper Socks. My stylist Madeline was super nice and replied to my special request with the following:

‘Hi Prue! Thanks for the note. Unfortunately we don’t have any MukLuks left in stock, but I have included some other great pieces that I hope you love! Enjoy :)’

So what did I get?

First look

The products

Real Underwear Fusion Bralette in Lipgloss
Sample value $26US

Wantable says – ‘From Real Underwear: The fusion bralette has a thin strip of micro elastic between layers of fabric, creating an ultra-comfortable seamless bra!’

This matches the singlet I received in my Wantable Intimates box last month. It feels nice on but isn’t really my style.

Black and Pink Work It Out Sports Bra by Rene Rofe
Sample value $9.95US (I found it on sale the RRP is $28)

Wantable says – ‘This bra features a racerback detail. it is soft and perfect for lounging in or working out in!’

Yay! I love comfy sports bras. It’s a fun colour too!

Bedhead Tie Dy Cami by Honeydew Intimates
Sample value $9 (on sale similar item in plain colour RRP is $20)

Wantable says – ‘From Honeydew: Our classic thin-strap tie dye top is so easy to wear alone or under anything for that layered look. Toss in some frosty-fresh tie-dye prints and you’ve got a must-have look!’

At first look I didn’t think this was really me but then I put it on and I love it. It’s so comfy and the colour brings out my tan and my eyes. Love it!

Third Love Mesh Plunge Bra
Sample value $39US

Wantable says – ‘This Mesh Plunge acts like a basic but walks on the wild side. Angled cups give a stunning natural lift, and the sexy lace details is a perfect touch.’

This one feels a little flimsy to me but I think that is how it’s supposed to feel. Light weight! It’s a nice basic bra with a fun pop of hot pink.

How much does it cost?

The first box costs $40 and then if you keep all the items in the box you get a $4 credit for next time. Making it $36.

I kept all my items from last month so I was billed  $36 for a monthly subscription and $10 for shipping to Australia.

TOTAL COST $46 US (on today’s dollar that makes it $62.88 Aussie dollars)

How long did it take to get to Australia?

My Wantable boxes always seem to take about two weeks to get here from the US.

Was it worth it?

Three out of four is pretty good. I’ll get good use out of the cami and two black bras. The purple bralette isn’t my style but I will give it a whirl and see how we go. Value wise I received over $80US worth of goods for a spend of $46US. So that’s pretty good. I do enjoy my Wantable Intimates boxes as it saves me time and money. My April box is probably already on it’s way but for May I think I’ll swap to the Accessories box. I love Spring accessories :-)

If you’d like to get your own Wantable Intimates Box visit Wantable to get your own subscription box filled with goodies!

Birchbox review – February 2015

I always love to see the Birchbox parcel waiting at my post office box.

This month’s theme was friendship and it came in a orange and hot pink box.

The products

Benefit Cosmetics Posiebalm
Sample size 0.5 grams
Sample value $3US

Birchbox says – ‘This mango butter balm hydrates lips and provides a wash of sheer, just-right pink. Sweep onto bare lips, or over your favourite Benefit tint for instant moisture.

Yay! I love Benefit and I’ve been wanting to try this colour. I already own it in two other colours Benebalm and Lollibalm. So I know I am onto a winner with this.

Davines MINU Shampoo
Sample size 75ml
Sample value $7.50US

Birchbox says – ‘Richly foaming wash that gently cleanses hair and safeguards color. Massage generously into wet hair. Rinse well, and follow with color-safe conditioner.’

I’m always happy to see hair products in my Birchbox. I love that this smells like citrus. It makes washing my hair even more pleasant.

Davines MINU Hair Serum
Sample size 6ml
Sample value 0.94US

Birchbox says – ‘Bonus item – This citrusy-fresh formula protects hair color and boosts shine.’

A bonus hair serum is always a good thing in my book!

Gilchrist & Soames London Collection Shower Gel
Sample size 1 oz
Sample value $2US

Birchbox says – ‘Rich in antioxidants, this paraben-free cleanser leaves skin soft and lightly moisturised. Squeeze onto loofah or washcloth, and work into a rich lather. Apply to skin, then rinse.’

This shower gel reminds me of being in a super posh hotel. Which is a nice feeling in my quaint little bathroom.

Harvey Prince Hello
Sample size 1.5ml guesstimation
Sample value $4.43US

Birchbox says – ‘Best-selling spritz that mingles cheerful citrus with floral notes. Well, hello there! Apply to pulse points and let this upbeat scent do the talking.’

I don’t wear perfume all that often but this is a nice cheerful scent. It’s sweet and fruity, perhaps a bit too sweet for everyday wear although it does soften throughout the day.

Marcelle Gentle Make-up Remover for Sensitive Eyes
Sample size 50ml
Sample value $5US

Birchbox says – ‘Hypoallergenic formula that’s tough on even long-lasting makeup, but gentle on the eyes. Dispense onto cotton ball and wipe eyes to remove liner, shadow, and mascara.’

I actually needed a new eye makeup remover so I am happy to give this one a whirl.

How much does it cost?

Birchbox costs $10US a month. I signed up for a 12 month subscription of $110US, you get one month free and it works out $9.16US a month

I use Shipito to ship the box from the US to Australia. This months shipping cost was $26.81 USPS Priority Mail. It cost quite a lot more this month as you can’t ship perfume by airmail economy. Sigh… So I don’t really like getting perfume samples.

TOTAL COST $35.97US (on today’s dollar that makes it $46.40 Aussie dollars)

Was it worth it?

I am a huge fan of Birchbox. Each month it is nicely packaged and presented and I get useful items. This was a good month for me as it was very practical – lip balm, shampoo, shower gel, perfume and eye makeup remover. All good daily products. It’s good to try different daily products to reinvigorate yourself and experience new things. It really does brighten my day trying new beauty products!

This month I received $22.87US worth of products. Value wise this would be good value if I didn’t have to ship it to Australia using USPS due to perfume in the package. It would be great if Birchbox had an option where you could choose no perfume.

StudioWedBox review – March 2015

StudioWedBox review – March 2015

Yay! I love seeing the StudioWedBox waiting for me in the mail box. This is my fifth StudioWedBox.

This month’s theme was ‘old, new, borrowed & blue’.

This month’s tip was to make sure you book your wedding officiant early, at least 6 months in advance if possible.

First look

The products

Handkerchief
Value $4.33 US

StudioWedBox says – ‘Something Old… A vintage handkerchief is the perfect hand me down for your wedding day. Personalize it by embroidering it with your wedding date and this will be something you will keep forever, and pass on to generations to come.’

Well I would never have thought of a handkerchief. Probably nicer than carrying around a packet of tissues. Although I always feel a bit weird about handkerchiefs, I’d rather just use a tissue and throw it away.

After browsing wedding embroidery on etsy I’m feeling a little crafty so I will give embroidering this a go!

Boutonniere pin by Susabella
Value $19.50 US

StudioWedBox says – ‘Something New… A boutonniere pin, from Susabella, is a great way to your significant other involved when it comes to something old, new, borrowed, and blue. Not only can you keep this forever, but also maybe one day you can pass this onto someone else to become their something old.’

I actually didn’t know what a boutonniere pin was when I opened this box! Apparently it’s french for buttonhole and it’s a pin to help keep the flower on the groom’s jacket (as well as the groom’s men, father of the bride and father of the groom). So there you go. I’ll have to pay more attention to the groom outfit section of the wedding magazines!

This is made out of clay and feels quite nice. Maybe a little heavy?

Stubby cooler (Koozie) by Rook Design Co.
Value $6.58 US (based on a minimum order of 12)

StudioWedBox says – ‘Something Borrowed… You can borrow anything from jewelry, a veil, and even a garter! Since we are all about giving goodies (instead of borrowing) here is a fun koozie that plays a twist on this classic saying. Rook Design Co. has a ton of wonderful designs… Go check them out!’

I’m a big fan of the stubby cooler and I do have a bit of a collection going. It’s high up on my wedding favour list to do a stubby cooler, so I am glad to see a sample.

Value wise it costs $134US for 100 Koozies, which works out to $1.34 per item. That is pretty good value.

Ring dish
Value $10 (guesstimation)

StudioWedBox says – ‘Something Blue… Get creative when it comes to your something blue! A ring bearer bowl, from Down The Road With Me, can not only carry your something new down the aisle, but can make a great back drop for you and your new sweeties rings! You can also use this as something to place your rings in once you get home. This could be a fun way to introduce something new or blue!’

This is a cute little ring dish. I already have a ring holder, it’s a cute elephant that I got in a PopSugar Must Haves Box. I couldn’t find a value or the supplier for this dish online.

Freeze dried rose petals in bridal pink
Value $5.95US

StudioWedBox says – ‘Something to add… Once the kiss has happened and it is time for you to walk back down the aisl, freeze dried petals, from flyboynaturals, make a great option for your guest to toss, Not only do the look beautiful, they make for some great pictures!’

What a great idea! I wouldn’t have even thought of freeze dried petals. The website says these are non-staining, not slippery, all natural, eco-friendly and biodegradabl. So that’s bound to make the wedding venue happy. The rose petals come in lots of different shades and while they are based in the US, they do ship internationally.

Oh wow, a quick google and there is plenty of Australian suppliers for freeze dried rose petals. Who knew. These two supplier look good – Simple Rose Petals and Rose Petals by The Flower Factory.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has used freeze dried rose petals. How many is a good amount to get and how did you distribute them?

Extra bonuses

Also in the box was a coupon for The Garter Girl (this pink and ivory lace one is my favourite) and a cute 5 inch x 7 inch postcard from Five Dot Design.

How much does it cost?

US and Canada based subscribers have three options:

  • Monthly subscription $39.99
  • 6 month subscription $34.99 per month (save $5 per month)
  • 12 month subscription $29.99 per month (save $10 per month)

International subscribers (e.g. me!) pay $39.99 per month plus $10 postage. Bringing it to $49.99US in total, which on today’s Aussie Dollar is $64.78.

Was it worth it?

I love this subscription. It helps me to plan and think outside of the box. Every month it provides me with ideas and inspiration. Value wise this month I received approximately $45US worth of items plus the postcard and a garter 50% off coupon. So it is pretty much spot on what I spent.

PS – This month I’d love to hear what was (or will be) your something old, something borrowed, something new and something blue.
