Birchbox review – November 2014

My November Birchbox was a good one. The theme for this box was ‘Giving’.

The products

Cynthia Rowley Beauty Creamy Lip Stain in Heartthrob
Sample size 2.25grams
Sample value $9.37US

Birchbox says – ‘A long-wearing stain from the NYC-based designer that gives unbeatable moisture and shine. Sweep over lips for a sheer, perfect-for-fall red color. Layer on for a deeper shade.’

I wore this on Christmas Day and I thought it looked very festive. I liked the creamy feel. It stained my lips a little bit but not as much as my Benefit stain does. It was long lasting but had to be reapplied after eating.

dr. brandt pores no more vacuum cleaner
Sample size 7.5grams
Sample value $11.25US

Birchbox says – ‘Award-winning gel that degunks pores for fewer blackheads and smoother skin. Two or three times weekly, apply a thin layer to the areas of concern. Rinse after 5 – 10 minutes.’

I have a few blackheads on my nose, so I’ll be able to put this to work!

Fekkai Technician Color Care Luxe Color Masque
Sample size 48 grams
Sample value $6.03US

Birchbox says – ‘This rich treatment blocks UV rays and keeps color-treated hair looking true-to-hue. Once or twice per week work through damp hair. Wait 2 – 5 minutes, then rinse well.’

I love the Fekkai Glossing Creme so I am excited to try something else from this brand.

Jolie Folie de Joie eau de parfum
Sample size 2ml
Sample value $1.72US

Birchbox says – ‘A Birchbox customer face, this fresh scent blends mandarin, rose, and sandalwood.’

I’m not really a perfume person but I quite like this. I really love sandalwood as a scent and the addition of mandarin makes it a really happy smell.

Mirenesse iCurl Secret Weapon 24hr Mascara
Sample size 4 grams
Sample value $11.40US

Birchbox says – ‘With its unique sculpting brush, this long-lasting formula gives lashes a dramatic lift. Sweep on two coats for a bold effect. To remove, just use warm water and gently pressure.’

I have used Mirenesse mascara before and been impressed with how good it worked on my sensitive eyes. I am happy to be reminded about this great product.

Bonus item
Blood Orange Carmel – Vosges Petits Chocolats
Sample value $1.66US

Birchbox says – ‘We added in this Blood Orange Caramel for a citrusy sweet treat.’

Yay! I love treats and wow was it tasty. Definitely would love more of those! Thanks Birchbox πŸ™‚

How much does it cost?

Birchbox costs $10US a month. I signed up for a 12 month subscription of $110US, you get one month free and it works out $9.16US a month

I use Shipito to ship the box from the US to Australia. This months shipping cost was $6.33 US using Airmail Economy.

TOTAL COST $15.49US (on today’s dollar that makes it $18.88 Aussie dollars)

Was it worth it?

In total I received $41.43US in goods which is way over what I spent. Everything in this box was useful to me. I love the lipgloss, the chocolate was delicious, my hair always needs some TLC and both the mascara and facemask will get use. All in all a great box!

Birchbox 12 month subscription should I do it? YES!

Birchbox 12 month subscription should I do it? YES!

Before we went on our Europe holiday my 12 month Birchbox subscription ran out. I let it go as we’d be away but now that I am back, I definitely needed to resubscribe. Birchbox is one of my favourite boxes. It is reasonably priced at only $10US a month, beautifully packaged and I find it a great way to discover and try new beauty products.

When you buy a 12 month subscription you receive one month free. So that works out to $9.16 a box! Bargain πŸ™‚

If you spend over $35 on full sized products you can also add a free Mystery Sample Pack to your order. If you haven’t spent over $35 on full sized products you can still add a Mystery Sample Pack but it costs you $10. The Mystery Sample Pack includes one deluxe and one regular sized sample. Because my order was over $35 I was all good to get it for free. Hooray!

I also repurchased the Tocca Crema de Mano Hand Cream in Cleopatra, I got a sample in my November 2013 Birchbox and really loved it!

I am super excited to see what is in my first box and my Mystery Sample Pack. I’ll post a review once I have had a chance to play with the products.

If you are trying to decide if Birchbox is right for you please read my previous Birchbox reviews or join Birchbox to get your own box. I’d love to hear your thoughts about Birchbox as well, so please comment below πŸ™‚

Umba Box

Umba Box have done a bit of a spring clean, jazzed up their website and renamed their boxes.

The original $25 box is now called ‘Umba’s Discover Box’ and the limited edition $49 box is now called the ‘Umba’s Delight Box’. I like these new titles and the website looks great. I will definitely be ordering an Umba Box subscription again in the future.

Read my previous Umba Box reviews.

Tomorrow Birchbox are announcing what is in their ‘Limited Edition Home Box: Snow Day!’ I wonder what will be in it?

Birchbox review – November 2013

Birchbox review – November 2013

The November Birchbox theme was ‘More Good’ and was about ways you could bring more good into you life and also give good to others. Leading the charge Birchbox donated a portion of the Birchbox Shop’s proceeds from November to ‘No Kid Hungry‘ an American charity that aims to end childhood hunger.

The products

Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter Pencil
Sample size 1.4 grams
Sample value $18 US

Birchbox says – ‘This face illuminator brightens and contours – it can be applied in 10 different ways! Blend onto brow bones, cheekbones, or along lip line. Go to our Magazine for a tutorial.’

I often like to highlight the inner corner of my eyes for that extra pop and the Chella Highlighter pencil works great for this. It goes on nice and smooth, looks pretty and doesn’t irritate my eyes! Birchbox have a tutorial where they collaborate with Instyle magazine to create a 10 minute holiday party look. In this tutorial they use the Chella as a brow highlighter. However I wanted to know a bit more about the contouring properties of the highlighter andΒ  I found this great tutorial by ChellaSkinCare, One Highlighter Pencil – 10 ways to use it more useful.

Color Club Top Shelf

Birchbox says -‘From the new Cocktail Hour Collection, this shimmering shade gives nails a gorgeous glint. Use tow coats for a gleaming finish.’

Unfortunately I didn’t get this. Not due to Birchbox but because of the way I shipped the product to myself. I tried to be tricky (which so far never works out!) and I tried to combine my PopSugar Must Have, Birchbox and Birchbox Man into one package. It then worked out cheaper to ship it express by DHL but because nailpolish is flammable DHL couldn’t send it express, so I had to have it removed from the package πŸ™

TOCCA Crema da Mano in Cleopatra
Sample size 30ml
Sample value $4 US

Birchbox says – ‘Loaded with natural oils, this grapefruit and cucumber lotion absorbs in a flash. Rub generously into hands – and anywhere you need a moisture boost.’

I love this product! I was surprised to find that it’s only $8 for a 60ml bottle. I thought it would be way more expensive because it feels so luxurious and smells amazing. I have this in my handbag and I have been using it everyday. To me it smells more like watermelon than grapefruit and cucumber, in fact I actually thought that it was watermelon scented for the first few days. I was super surprised to find out that it was grapefruit and cucumber because I really do not like cucumber at all.

Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
Sample size 20 grams
Sample value $5.66 US

Birchbox says – ‘This customer fave mimics effects of microdermabrasion for a glowing, smooth complexion. 3 – 5 times a week, massage a pea-sized amount into damp skin and rinse. For all skin types.’

I have been using this every second day. It is nice and gentle on my skin but I haven’t really noticed a visible difference in my complexion. I have seen great reviews for this product, so perhaps it is just not for me? UPDATE – An extra week or two using this product and I have now started to notice a more glowing complexion πŸ™‚ So I just needed some patience!

Chuao Chocopod
Sample size 1 chocopod
Sample value $1.24

Birchbox says – ‘Made with premium cacao, these inventive treats satisfy any sweet tooth. We trust that you’re an experienced chocolate taster – enjoy!’

I got the Honeycomb flavoured chocopod. I didn’t really like this chocolate. The texture was a bit rough. I’d prefer a more smooth creamy piece of chocolate.

How much does it cost?

Birchbox costs $10 a month. I signed up for a 12 month subscription using Shipito which cost me:

$110 for the 12 month Birchbox subscription (you get one month free)
$8.50 for the assisted purchase (they purchased it for me as a gift as Birchbox only accepts American credit cards)
$8.80 the Shipito 8% commission fee
$4.73 the Shipito bank fees
________________________
TOTAL $132.03

Which makes it $11 per box over the 12 months plus shipping. This months shipping cost was $15.84 US.

TOTAL COST $26.84 US (on today’s dollar that makes it $30.15 Aussie dollars)

How long did it take to get to Australia?

I used DHL express which took 5 days to get to me!

This time I tried to be tricky and combine my PopSugar Must Haves, Birchbox and Birchbox Man into one package. This combined method ended up costing me $79.24 US (on today’s dollar that makes it $89.02 Aussie dollars).

Was it worth it?

This was another great box from Birchbox πŸ™‚ The total box value was $28.90 US not including the nail polish. Which was still less than what I paid in total. My favourite products this month were the TOCCA hand cream and Chella Highlighter Pencil.
