Violet Box review June 2013

The first Violet Box was pretty exciting. I have never received the launch of a subscription box before so I was pretty excited.

It arrived liked this…

The box.

A box within a box.

First look…

and under the tissue paper.

The Products

Avene Gentle Gel Cleanser
Sample size 50 ML
Sample value $7.70

Violet Box says – ‘The Avene Gentle Gel Cleanser, has been specifically formulated for normal to combination sensitive skin. Based on only extra-gentle cleansing agents. It removes all traces of make-up form the face, eyes and lips, leaving skin soft and supple. It’s also soap free and hypoallergenic.’

What a great cleanser! I’ve been using this in combination with the Lierac Paris Concentre Mesolift Toning Radiance Serum that I got in my May Birch Box and my skin feels fantastic.

CK One Color Cosmetics, Gloss Eyecolor in 400 Vivid
Sample size
Sample value $25

Violet Box says – ‘Gloss eyecolor by CK One Color Cosmetics are soft sheen transparent color gloss pencils that are infinitely blendable, multi-tasking, spontaneous color.’

I’m actually not even sure that sentence makes sentence from Violet Box makes sense!

When I first got this, I thought it was a lip gloss and I was super excited. Than I realised it was a blue chubby eye pencil/crayon. Not so exciting. I saw that some people got this in a different shade. I would have much rather received the white (Ultra) or gold (Spin).

Image from Calvin Klein website. I broke mine 🙁

Calvin Klein Sheer Beauty EDT
Sample size 1.2 ML
Sample value $1.90

Violet Box says – ‘Calvin Klen has launched a new edition of Beauty fragrance, named Sheer Beauty. The composition is floral – fruity, opening with notes of bergamot, red berries and peach Bellini. The perfume’s core includes flowers of peony, pink lily and jasmine. The base is velvety due to accords of sandalwood, musk and vanilla blossom.’

This smells really, really good. I was using it every day until I dropped the glass vial in the bathroom. It smashed into a zillion pieces. I couldn’t believe it. So sad 🙁

John Plunkett Glyco Peel
Sample size 15 ML (full sized item)
Sample value $28.95

Violet Box says – ‘Clinical strength, night-time exfoliator with 25% glycolic acid in a buffered solution. Gently exfoliates skin surface removing old, dull surface skin cells. Reduces fine lines and surface discolouration, keeping skin looking clear, younger and refreshed.

I am too scared to use this. I have sensitive skin and I’m worried it will be too harsh on my skin. Sigh…

LashControl Clear Coat Control Mascara and Brow Fix
Sample size 8.87 ML (full sized item)
Sample value $25

Violet Box says – ‘Brought to you from NYC.. LashControl Clear Coat Control Mascara and Brow Fix (a.k.a “Clear Squeeze”) Clear coat formula for taming wayward brows, minus the “wet” look. And, it’s the perfect top coast to layer over your black mascara and seal in the pigment.’

This product is exclusive to Violet Box and was the New York product the Violet Box team hinted at.

I liked this when I used it as a brow tamer. I haven’t tried it as a layer over mascara yet. I have tried it as a clear mascara and thought that it just made my lashes look wet 😐

Argania Hair Oil
Sample size 5 ML
Sample value $1.75

Violet Box says – Argania for hair is made with certified organic Moroccan Argan oil specially formulated to be rich in vitamins and antioxidants.’

I got the ‘Light’ version of this product which is for lightened, silver or fine hair. I have brown thick hair but that hasn’t stopped this product from being one of my favourites in the box. It smells delicious, makes my hair feel nice and gives it a glossy shine. I’ve been using this product to reduce fly-aways and add some shine to my hair. I like this way better than the Nexxus Youth Renewal Rejuvenating Elixir I got in my Welcome Birch Box.

How much does it cost?

Violet Box costs $22.95 a month. If you subscribe for a longer period you also get Violet Points which you can use in the Violet Box Store.

  • A three month subscription will get you 400 Violet Points.
  • A six month subscription will get you 1000 Violet Points.
  • A year subscription will get you 2500 Violet Points

Was it worth it?

The first Violet Box had 6 products in it. Three of those products I really liked – the Calvin Klein Sheer Beauty perfume, Avene Gentle Gel Cleanser and Argania Hair Oil.

The value of the box was over $90. Which is great 🙂 However I really only loved the three cheaper products! Which made the value for me, more like $11.35.

I’m excited to see what is instore in the July Violet Box (which hopefully I should get very soon!)
